DO YOU WANT TO EDIT YOUR OWN WEBSITE?

ARE YOU SURE?

We’ve done a lot of websites now, and a growing number of our customers are asking for websites that they can easily edit themselves.  Typically this type of website uses online software called a Content Management System, or CMS. The CMS we use is very easy for our customers and preserves the original design so they can’t “break” the website.  Although it’s easy, we’ve noticed that most of our clients rarely, or never, update their site.  Why?

You Should Let a Pro Handle Website Updates If...

1. ...you are not web and computer savvy. I make it easy to update a site, but if you haven’t taken the time to learn and enjoy computing before you’ll lose interest in updating your website quickly. 2. ...your primary business does not allow you to be near a computer often.  For instance, if you work construction outside all day, the last thing you will want to do is come home for the evening and try to remember to update a website. 3. ...you don’t have someone that will enjoy doing the updates. Some of my clients put the responsibility on a secretary or another employee who have no specific interest in managing the website.  This complacency will show in the content they put on the site and it will tend to have a dreary feel to it. 4. ...spelling and grammar are not your Forté.  I hesitated to include this point because I have poor grammar... but I try really hard!  Since I do this for a business it’s okay to work hard at it, but you have enough other things to work hard at. 5. ...you already struggle to get things done. If you are already pressed for time, this extra responsibility will become a thorn in your side.  The first month or two won’t be too bad because it’s new and exciting, but in time you won’t have enough time :).

You Should Update Your Website Yourself With a CMS If...

1. ...the majority of your business is Internet related. If you sell items online, or bring in most of your business by your website, then you’ll want to constantly be updating and keeping relevant content on your site. 2. ...you have content that needs to be updated daily. Although you could still hire someone to do daily updates for you, the reality is that you will save money over time to have someone “in-house” do daily updates for you. 3. ...you have good writing technique.  If you have a tendency to use caps- lock for entire messages, first stop doing that, then hire someone to update your website:).  4. ...your personality is why you are successful. If you have a unique personality that people connect with for some reason or another, your website’s content should reflect that personality. 5. ...you understand Search Engine Optimization and key words. You should at least understand the basics of how a search engine will find your site through it’s content. This knowledge will bring more people to your site and keep them coming back again.

You Can Have the Best of Both Worlds

The best solution for many of my clients has been to give them certain areas of the website that they can update, and I’ll take care of the rest.  I do monthly/quarterly/yearly contracts with clients, as well as inexpensive one-time updates.  Clients can still update a blog, news, calendar, or product page, but won’t have any access to optimized content on the rest of the website. If you’re not sure which option is best for you, please let us know what your looking for and we’ll point you in the right direction.

BUSINESS CARDS AND BROCHURES

STILL WORK

I admit that I am a little bit of a computer nerd, and my love for statistics goes along with that nicely.  The statistics continue to show that brochures and business cards are still one of the most effective forms of advertising and have the best Return On Investment (ROI).  In other words, they are the best bang for your buck.  Although Internet advertising is typically easy and inexpensive, 1000 business cards (ordered through Roark Graphics of course) can be as low as $50.  At only 5 cents per card, that is a deal you shouldn’t refuse. Businessmen still collect business cards, and they are often put in wallets, pockets, and at the very least, will be seen a second time when retrieving them. Brochures are very effective at giving a brief overview of your product or service.  People that pick up your brochure are statistically more likely to place orders.  When designed properly, they will lead the person to open up the brochure and discover all of your business offerings.

Think Outside the Box with Business Cards & Brochures

These products are not boring.  They can be exciting, creative, and effective.  A few examples: You could have several designs of business cards that fit together like a puzzle and when someone collects all your cards they get a reward.  You can have a card that is very targeted like one that is specifically made to be left at a gas pump and says, “As your pumping gas, we want you to get pumped up about our product”.  Brochures can be design with eye catching coupons that will be hard to pass up.  QR codes can be utilized so people with smart phones can scan the code and get your contact info, or be sent to a certain website. If you want something creative, eye catching, and profitable, go ahead and contact us.... you’ll be glad you did!
